Alemba’s Carbon Reduction Plan

Remote working

Fighting climate change

Operating as a virtual company with no physical offices, Alemba leverages remote work for both customer-facing services and internal administrative functions, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Alemba has minimised emissions to as close to zero as possible, with only minimal carbon output on a very low volume of travel.

This innovative approach eliminates the need for daily commutes and the operation of office buildings, two major sources of carbon emissions. By conducting business digitally and utilising cloud-based technologies, Alemba not only enhances efficiency and flexibility but also demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Currently, Alemba mitigates our environmental impact through the following measures:

  • Published content e.g. case studies, brochures etc. are available to be distributed electronically or can be downloaded via our website. Hard copies of our brochures are available when attending trade shows or attending site at our customers and prospects.
  • Alemba Service Manager is a browser-based application and requires a zero-client footprint and anyone with access to a web browser can access ASM if they have a valid login and permissions to do so.
  • The Alemba team from Support Desk, engineering through to Professional Services look to minimise mass document print production by sending its formal collateral electronically and will only store hard copies of material when the need permits e.g. NDA/Contracts.
  • Alemba has established a remote-first policy to reduce our carbon footprint and ensure the health and safety of our staff and clients. All Alemba staff work remotely, and face-to-face client engagements are kept to a minimum.
  • As a close-to net zero supplier, Alemba will not add to the carbon footprint of customers.

Carbon Reduction Plan for Alemba

1. Energy Efficiency Measures:

  • Virtual Office Setup: As a virtual company, our primary mode of operation is through digital platforms. We will continue to leverage cloud-based services for our operations, reducing the need for physical infrastructure and minimising energy consumption.
  • Energy-Efficient Hardware: Encourage employees to use energy-efficient devices such as laptops, monitors, and servers. Ensure that all new hardware purchases meet stringent energy efficiency standards.
  • Power Management: Implement automatic power management settings on all company devices to ensure they enter sleep mode when not in use. Encourage employees to turn off devices when they are not needed for extended periods.

2. Remote Work Policies:

  • Remote Work Culture: Continuation of the current remote work approach among to reduce commuting emissions.
  • Virtual Meetings: Encourage the use of virtual meetings and conferences instead of physical ones whenever possible. Utilise video conferencing tools to facilitate communication among team members and clients.

3. Software Optimisation:

  • Code Optimisation: Alemba Service Manager is continuously assessed in its design to minimise the cloud resources consumed, ensuring efficient utilisation and reduced environmental footprint.

Our approach to optimising cloud resource consumption encompasses several key strategies:

    • Lean Architecture: Alemba Service Manager is built on a lean and efficient architecture that prioritises resource optimisation without compromising performance. By minimising unnecessary layers and components, we reduce the overall resource footprint of our application while maintaining robust functionality.
    • Performance Tuning: Our development team employs rigorous performance tuning techniques to identify and eliminate bottlenecks that may lead to excessive resource consumption. Through continuous optimisation and refinement, we ensure that Alemba Service Manager operates efficiently on cloud infrastructure, minimising unnecessary resource usage.
    • Efficient Codebase: We adhere to best practices for writing clean, efficient code that minimises resource overhead. Through code optimisation and refactoring, we strive to reduce the computational complexity of Alemba Service Manager, resulting in lower resource requirements and improved performance.
  • Cloud Optimisation: Optimising servers in the Azure cloud plays a crucial role in our carbon reduction plan at Alemba. By leveraging Azure's advanced infrastructure and implementing optimisation strategies, we can significantly reduce our environmental footprint while delivering reliable and scalable services to our customers.

Through efficient resource allocation and utilisation, we minimise the number of servers required to support our workloads, thereby reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with data centre operations. Azure's built-in scalability features allow us to dynamically adjust server capacity based on demand, ensuring optimal resource utilisation and avoiding unnecessary energy consumption during periods of low activity.

Additionally, Azure offers a range of energy-efficient server configurations and power management features that further contribute to our carbon reduction efforts. By leveraging these capabilities, we can ensure that our cloud infrastructure operates as efficiently as possible, minimising both our operational costs and environmental impact.

4. Sustainable Practices:

  • Paperless Operations: Continue to minimise the use of paper in our operations by digitising documents and processes wherever possible. The adoption of a paperless office aligns seamlessly with our broader commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility. By eliminating the need for paper-based documents, we are significantly reducing our consumption of natural resources, including trees, water, and energy, while also minimizing the carbon emissions associated with paper production, transportation, and disposal.

Furthermore, transitioning to digital workflows enables us to streamline our operations, enhance collaboration, and improve productivity. Digital documents are easier to store, retrieve, and share, leading to reduced administrative overhead and increased efficiency across the organization. Additionally, digital processes are inherently more scalable and adaptable, allowing us to respond more effectively to changing business needs and market dynamics.
  • Sustainable Procurement: Sustainable procurement aligns seamlessly with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and advancing environmental stewardship. By sourcing products and services from suppliers that adhere to stringent environmental standards and practices, we can minimise the carbon emissions associated with our operations. This includes selecting suppliers who prioritise renewable energy, minimise waste generation, and employ eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

Furthermore, sustainable procurement enables us to drive innovation and create value across our organisation. By partnering with suppliers that prioritise sustainability, we gain access to innovative products and solutions that help us further reduce our environmental impact and enhance the sustainability of our operations. This includes investing in energy-efficient technologies, implementing waste reduction initiatives, and promoting circular economy principles.

In addition to environmental benefits, sustainable procurement also delivers social and economic advantages. By supporting suppliers that prioritise fair labour practices, diversity, and inclusion, we contribute to the well-being of communities and promote social equity. Moreover, by fostering long-term partnerships with sustainable suppliers, we create opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration, driving shared value creation and business resilience.

5. Collaboration:

  • Industry Collaboration: Collaborate with other companies within the Volaris group to share best practices and initiatives for carbon reduction.

6. Continuous Improvement:

  • Feedback Mechanisms: Establish feedback mechanisms to gather suggestions and ideas from employees on how we can further reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Regular Review: Conduct regular reviews and assessments of our carbon reduction plan to identify areas for improvement and adjustment.

By implementing these measures, Alemba will significantly reduce its carbon footprint while actively contributing to the broader goal of achieving Carbon Neutral Britain’s Carbon Neutral Certification by end of 2026.
